About Joanne

Teaching philosophy & background

Hi, my name is Joanne — and Sujatha is my yoga name. Yoga has been a part of my existence for much of my adult life. I started practising at 24, teaching at 26, and have maintained a consistent yoga lifestyle of practice, teaching, and learning for more than 45 years.

My intentional approach to teaching is one of connecting with students from the moment they arrive — tuning in to meet them where they are, in their bodies, in their lives, in their day, and in their pose. My interest and best wishes are to bring the class to each student, individually and holistically, so that the class finds them, not the other way around.

Although Integral Yoga has primarily influenced my Hatha yoga teaching, I have also studied with several other traditions — particularly during yoga therapy training. These include Vini Yoga, Anusura Yoga, Shiva Rea's Vinyasa Flow, and Tom Myers' Anatomy Trains: an approach that has fostered, for me, tensegrity through practice and yoga for fascia release and revitalisation.

Through YACEP, I run a certified 200-hour Teacher Training programme annually and have also developed a 300-hour Teacher Training programme. As a journalism graduate, I love to write about all things yoga — you'll find my writings through my quarterly Constant Contact newsletter and my Substack, where I post monthly under Yoga Musings and Satyagraha. My article "Yoga Therapy and the Importance of Spirituality for the Western Psyche" was published in the international magazine Yoga Therapy Today in January 2023.

I am the founder and owner of Yoga on the Rock, and I take delight in helping people manage their stress, improve their wellbeing, uplift their life, and find greater purpose — while living in the fishbowl here in Bermuda.
